Ghost Mannequin Editing
Ghost mannequin editing, also called the invisible mannequin effect, gives apparel a hollow 3D shape that looks worn by an invisible body. We composite your inside-collar and interior shots with the main image to rebuild the neck joint, cuffs, and hem, so the garment keeps its real form and drape without a model or a visible mannequin.

What it is
What is the ghost mannequin effect?
The ghost mannequin effect, also known as the invisible mannequin, is a product photo where clothing appears filled out in three dimensions but the body wearing it is invisible. It is the standard product-page style for apparel because it shows fit, shape, and drape clearly while keeping the focus entirely on the garment.
It is built by photographing the garment on a mannequin or form, then editing the mannequin out and merging a separate interior shot so the inside of the collar, cuffs, and hem look natural. Large fashion retailers use it across thousands of SKUs because it is consistent and far cheaper than booking models. New AI tools can fake the effect from a flat-lay in seconds, but they often distort fabric, seams, and joints, so for brand-grade results we composite by hand and use AI only where it holds up.

How we work
How we build the ghost mannequin look
1Shot list and setup
We confirm the interior and exterior shots we need so the joints can be rebuilt cleanly.
2Mannequin removal
We edit out the mannequin or form and isolate the garment from its background.
3Joint compositing
We merge the interior shots to construct the neck, sleeve, and hem joints.
4Shape and cleanup
We straighten seams, fix symmetry, and remove creases, lint, and stray threads.
5Background and format
We place the garment on white or your chosen backdrop and export to spec.
6Quality control
A second editor verifies joints and proportions across the batch before handoff.
Why it matters
Why apparel brands use it
Done by hand, ghost mannequin shots show fit honestly, scale across a catalog, and cost far less than model shoots.
Shows true fit
Shoppers see shape, drape, and proportion, which builds buying confidence and cuts returns.
Scales across SKUs
A repeatable style you can apply to an entire apparel range without re-shooting.
Cheaper than models
The worn look without booking models, studios, or repeat shoot days.
Who this is best for
The right fit
Best fit when
Apparel and accessory brands selling on marketplaces or their own store that want a consistent, model-free product look that shows real fit and drape.
You might not need this
If you only need the garment cut out on a clean background, this is more than the job calls for. Background Removal isolates the product without rebuilding the worn 3D shape.
FAQs
Common questions about ghost mannequin editing
What is the ghost mannequin or invisible mannequin effect?
It is a product photo where clothing appears worn and filled out in three dimensions, but the body inside it is invisible. The garment is shot on a mannequin or form, then the mannequin is edited out and interior shots are merged so the neck, cuffs, and hem look natural. The result shows fit and shape clearly without a model.
What is a neck joint?
A neck joint is the edited detail at the back of the collar that makes a hollow garment look like it has a real opening. It is created by compositing a separate inside-collar shot into the main image. Without it, the back of the neck looks flat or empty, which is the giveaway of a cheap edit.
Is AI ghost mannequin good enough?
AI tools can generate the effect from a flat-lay in seconds and are useful for quick drafts or simple cuts. They frequently distort seams, fabric texture, and the joints, especially on structured garments, patterns, and complex collars. For brand-grade catalog images we composite by hand so fit and fabric stay accurate, and use AI only where it does not compromise the result.
What shots do you need from me?
At minimum we need the garment photographed on a mannequin or form from the front, plus an interior shot of the inside collar so the neck joint can be built. For some pieces we also use back and inside-cuff shots. We will give you a simple shot list before you photograph so nothing has to be reshot.
Can you do ghost mannequin for all clothing types?
Yes, including tops, shirts, dresses, outerwear, knitwear, and many accessories. Structured items with collars and cuffs need the most joint work, while simple pieces are faster. Tell us the garment types in your range and we will confirm scope and turnaround.
How much does ghost mannequin editing cost per image?
Pricing depends on garment complexity and how many joints each piece needs, so a simple tee costs less than a lined jacket with a collar and cuffs. It is priced per image and the rate drops at catalog volume. Send a representative sample and we will quote against your actual garments.
