Wine, Spirits & Beer Label Design
Wine, spirits, and beer label design is the work of making a bottle or can stand out on a crowded shelf while carrying everything the TTB requires. Beverage alcohol is regulated by the TTB, not the FDA, so the label has to get the class and type, the alcohol content, the government health warning, and other mandatory copy right before it can be approved for sale. We design labels that win on the shelf and are built to be COLA-ready, though we do not file the COLA or guarantee its approval.

What it is
What is wine, spirits, and beer label design?
Wine, spirits, and beer label design is the design of the label and packaging for a beverage-alcohol product so it stands out on the shelf and meets the rules the TTB enforces. It places the mandatory information, such as the brand and class or type, the alcohol content, the net contents, the name and address, and the government health warning, in the form and place the TTB requires.
Beverage alcohol is its own regulatory world, governed by the TTB under federal rules rather than by the FDA, and most products need an approved Certificate of Label Approval, or COLA, before they can be sold. A common reason a submission is rejected is missing mandatory copy, so we build labels that are complete and COLA-ready. We design to current TTB rules, but we do not file the COLA for you or guarantee that it will be approved.

How we work
How we design alcohol labels
1Discovery and audit
We review your category, shelf set, price tier, and the TTB rules for your product type.
2Format and structure
We choose bottle or can formats, closures, and label substrates with your producer in mind.
3Design directions
We develop shelf-led directions and test them at real size against the competitive set.
4Mandatory copy layout
We place class and type, alcohol content, the government warning, and other required copy to TTB form.
5Range and prepress
We extend the design across the range and prepare COLA-ready press files.
6Proof and handoff
We check a printer proof, confirm color and foils, and hand off final artwork for your COLA filing.
Why it matters
Why alcohol labels matter
Done well, an alcohol label sells the bottle on the shelf and carries everything the TTB requires to approve it.
Shelf standout
Labels built to be noticed on a crowded shelf and to read the right price tier at a glance.
COLA-ready artwork
Complete, correctly formatted labels that reduce the back-and-forth a COLA submission can take.
A coherent portfolio
One system across varietals and expressions, so a full range looks like one producer.
Who this is best for
The right fit
Best fit when
You produce wine, spirits, beer, seltzer, or another beverage alcohol and you need a label that wins on the shelf and is ready for a COLA submission. It fits producers launching a product, extending a range, or refreshing a label that looks dated.
You might not need this
If your drink is non-alcoholic, it is regulated by the FDA rather than the TTB and uses a Nutrition Facts panel, so Food & Beverage Packaging Design is the right page. We design to TTB rules but do not file COLAs or guarantee approval.
FAQs
Common questions about alcohol labels
How much does alcohol label design cost?
It depends on the number of products in the range, the format, and how much structural and foil work the label needs. A single wine label costs far less than a spirits range with custom bottles and multiple expressions. We scope a fixed price after a short audit, so the cost is clear before design starts.
Do you file the COLA for me?
No. We design a complete, correctly formatted label that is ready for a COLA submission, but the filing itself is done by you or your compliance partner through the TTB. We build the artwork so it carries the mandatory copy a COLA needs. We do not guarantee approval, since that decision rests with the TTB.
What does the TTB require on an alcohol label?
Most beverage-alcohol labels must show the brand, the class or type, the alcohol content, the net contents, the name and address of the responsible party, and the government health warning in its exact required form. The specifics vary by product type across wine, spirits, and malt beverages. We lay these out to current TTB rules, so the label is complete before it is submitted.
Why do COLA submissions get rejected?
A frequent reason is missing or incorrect mandatory copy, such as an omitted health warning, an incorrect class or type, or a missing required statement. Because the fix is usually in the artwork, designing the label complete from the start saves a rejection and a resubmission. We build labels to avoid the common reasons a COLA comes back.
Can you design a custom bottle and the label together?
Yes. We design the label and the look of the bottle or can, and we specify foils, textures, and closures, working with your producer and printer on what is feasible. We are a design studio, not a glass or can maker, so we do not manufacture the components. We hand off specs and press-ready files they can run.
Do the rules differ for wine, spirits, and beer?
Yes. The TTB regulates wine, distilled spirits, and malt beverages under different parts of its rules, so the mandatory copy and some claims differ by product type. We design to the rules for your specific category rather than a one-size template. A recent TTB rule also updated some agave-spirit, origin, and strength requirements, which we flag to confirm.
